Location & Importance

Mamleshwar Temple, also called Amleshwar Mandir, is situated on the southern bank of the Narmada River opposite the famous Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga in Madhya Pradesh. Together, Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar are believed to form a complete Jyotirlinga, making this temple equally sacred for devotees of Lord Shiva.

Legends

Local tradition says that Shiva manifested here in two forms of lingams – one on the island of Omkareshwar and the other on the mainland at Mamleshwar. Worshipping both is considered highly auspicious.

Architecture

• The temple is built in the Nagara style and is protected as a heritage monument.

• The structure is made of stone, with a sanctum (garbhagriha), pillared hall, and intricately carved walls.

• Smaller shrines dedicated to Parvati, Ganesha, and Kartikeya are also found inside the complex.

• A tall shikhara (spire) gives the temple its distinct spiritual aura.

Rituals & Traditions

• A unique worship known as Lingarchana is performed here, where numerous small Shivlingas are arranged on wooden boards and offered prayers. This practice dates back to the time of Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar.

• Daily rituals include Mangala Aarti in the morning, Abhishek (ritual bathing of the lingam), and evening aarti.

• Special pujas like Parthiv Lingam puja and Pitru dosh shanti are also conducted.

Festivals

Major celebrations at Mamleshwar include:

• Maha Shivratri – thousands of devotees gather for night-long worship.

• Shravan month (July–August) – considered the holiest period to offer water and bel leaves.

• Kartik Poornima and Navratri are also observed with enthusiasm.

• Temple Timings: Approx. 5:30 AM – 9:00 PM daily.

• Entry Fee: None; puja charges vary depending on rituals.

• Dress Code: Decent traditional clothing is advised. Photography may be restricted inside the sanctum.

• Access: The temple is about 1–2 km from Omkareshwar bus stand. Devotees can reach by crossing the bridge over the Narmada or by boat.
