Bijli Mahadev Temple – Kullu
Location & Height of Bijli Mahadev
The temple is located on Mathan Hill, about 24 km from Kullu town, at an altitude of nearly 2,460 meters. It is surrounded by pine and deodar forests with breathtaking views of the Kullu, Parvati, and Garsa valleys.
Why temple name Bijli Mahadev
According to local belief, once in a while lightning strikes the temple’s Shiva Lingam, breaking it into pieces. The priest then carefully restores it with a paste of butter and flour. This is seen as a divine act showing Lord Shiva’s protection over the valley.
Temple Style Architecture
The shrine is built in the traditional Kath-Kuni architecture (wood and stone). A tall deodar staff of about 60 feet stands outside the temple. It shines like silver in sunlight and is believed to attract the lightning strikes that give the temple its name.
