The Tamil Nadu Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine has issued a warning in areas bordering Kerala following two confirmed deaths related to the Nipah virus in Kerala. Health teams are screening passengers from Kerala at border checkposts, and they have been deployed in districts sharing borders with Kerala, including Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Theni, Tenkasi, and Kanyakumari. The total number of confirmed cases in Kerala has risen to four, with one patient in critical condition. Health officials are also screening individuals with fever symptoms at the borders.
Tamil Nadu's Health Minister, Ma Subramanian, has reassured the public that there is no need for panic and that they will conduct screenings for people with fever symptoms. This outbreak in Kerala follows a previous one five years ago, which resulted in 17 deaths out of 18 reported cases. The virus was found in samples from two individuals who recently passed away in a private hospital in Kozhikode. It's important to note that a Nipah Virus infection case was reported in Kochi in 2019, but there were no casualties reported at that time. In September 2021, another outbreak was reported in Kozhikode, where a 12-year-old boy succumbed to the infection, but there were no further deaths reported.
