Petrol Availability On Manali or Srinagar To Leh

Hello Friends, are you wondering if you should carry extra fuel or petrol or diesel on your upcoming Ladakh trip or are you going to drive or ride on some of the remotest routes of Ladakh and confused if you will find a petrol pump on such routes. And if not, how do you manage it? Well, a lot of people are concerned about the fuel availability on their Leh Ladakh trips Both bikers as well as the people who are driving the cars, must be aware where they can find fuel in Ladakh and how much mileage their vehicles offer. This way you can always properly plan for fuel on your Ladakh trip. Otherwise, you may be easily left stranded in the middle of nowhere, with no help around. Today, in this express FAQ series on traveling to Ladakh, I am going to tell you everything in detail about the fuel availability on a Leh Ladakh road trip. So, let's get started. Hello, Namaste and Julleh! If you are new to my channel, My name is Dheeraj & I run a travel blog devilonwheels.com I help people in planning memorable & budget-friendly trips to the Himalayas, Smartly, Safely & Responsibly.

Well, friends, if you are traveling to regular tourist destinations in Ladakh like Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, and Tso Moriri using the conventional routes, you may not need to carry any spare fuel or petrol on your trips. However, you must keep in mind that in case you want to travel the direct routes between various tourist destinations in Ladakh, without coming back to Leh, then you must carry spare fuel with you in the car or bike. Another important point to note is that you must account for only about 70% mileage that you are used to getting from your vehicle in normal conditions back at home.

Knowing this mileage and location of various petrol pumps or fuel availability options,
will help you plan your Ladakh trip by car or bike, without any fuss. Now talking about where you can find petrol pumps on your Ladakh trip.If we talk of Ladakh region, well, both petrol or diesel is available at petrol pumps in Leh and then one petrol pump is present in Karu town, which is about 40 odd km from Leh on Manali Leh Highway. Apart from Leh or nearby, there is one petrol pump available in Diskit village in Nubra Valley as well. As of 2016, the Diskit petrol pump is fully functional and also remains operational in winter months mostly. Overall the fuel availability at these petrol pumps in Leh and Nubra Valley is tremendously improved as well in the last few years, as of 2020. So, you can now see that as long as you are traveling on normal routes and coming back to Leh after visiting a tourist destination in Ladakh like Nubra, Pangong or Tso Moriri lake, then you can always refill the petrol or diesel in Leh before heading back to the next tourist destination. However: The problem arises when you plan to travel on the direct routes between these places without coming back to Leh. Let us look at some of the common long routes in Ladakh along with the approximate distances that you will be covering on them without any petrol pumps.
So, by knowing these distances, now you can easily do the math with the mileage that your car or bike gives and what is the fuel tank capacity. As I said before just consider only 70% mileage than what your vehicle usually gives in regular conditions back at home. Whatever is remaining after the full tank, you should carry that much extra fuel from Leh with you on these routes. First on the list is Leh – Pangong Tso – Tso Moriri – Leh which is about 550 kms. So, after refueling at Leh, if you think your vehicle cannot do 550 km, then whatever math you did, carry the extra fuel accordingly with you on all these routes. Second is Leh – Nubra Valley – Pangong Tso – Tso Moriri – Leh which will be 600 km.

This distance is considering there is petrol pump in Nubra Valley and you have refueled up there. Similarly in the third route, if you will add Hanle, then you will be doing Leh – Nubra Valley – Pangong Tso – Hanle – Tso Moriri – Leh which will come around 700 km in total. Similar to above route, I have taken Nubra Valley petrol pump into account. Apart from these direct routes between various tourist destinations, let us look at what happens when you exit Leh from Manali - Leh Highway without coming back to Leh.First regular route is Leh – Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Sarchu – Keylong – Manali where you need to plan for about 550 km of fuel without any petrol pump. If you add Hanle to this route, you are looking to add about 200 km more, so plan for about 730 km of drive without any petrol pump. Next, if you do not wish to travel to Tso Moriri or Hanle and want to take the direct route to Manali from Leh over Manali Leh Highway, then up to Tandi petrol pump, you need to plan fuel for about 350 km. Finally if you have a further complicated plans, like doing the entire circuit from Leh to Nubra Valley to Pangong Tso to Tso Moriri and exit from Manali - Leh then look out for about 700 km considering Nubra Valley petrol pump. And if you add Hanle in this plan, then consider 800 km of drive without any petrol pump. And if in above two plans or circuits, you are not visiting Nubra Valley then reduce about 50 odd kms. Hence, you must keep these routes in mind and plan to carry spare fuel with you based on the distance you will be traveling without a fuel pump. But a very important thing to keep in mind is that, please DO NOT forget a carry a thin cloth that can be used with a funnel to filter any impurities while using such black fuel. I have mentioned about it in my previous video on 40 things you must carry on Ladakh self-drive trip. If you have not checked it yet, please do so using the link here. Now let us take some general questions about fuel availability on entire Ladakh trip. First one people ask is if you need to carry extra fuel or petrol on Srinagar Leh Highway? You do not need to carry any extra fuel or petrol on Srinagar Leh Highway. There are plenty of petrol pumps available on Srinagar Leh Highway, and even if you top up your tank at Kargil, you will easily reach Leh which is about 240 km from Kargil. Most cars can cover this much distance with full tank.
However, in case you are on a bike and the mileage is low, then you will need to carry spare petrol with you. Similarly second one is if you need to carry extra fuel or petrol on Manali Leh Highway?

Again you do not need to carry any extra fuel on Manali Leh Highway. Once you start from Manali, you will get the fuel at the Tandi petrol pump. After that, you have to travel 340 km before you reach the next fuel pump near Leh or at Karu. Again, most cars should not have any issues but in case you are on a motorcycle and the
mileage is low, then you will need to carry spare petrol with you.
In case of an emergency, you can buy some fuel from them. Again that thin cloth and funnel will come in handy here. So, friends, this was all about fuel or petrol availability in Ladakh and whether you need to carry extra fuel or petrol on your Ladakh trip or Srinagar Leh Highway or Manali Leh Highway
